Poppy came in to Battersea as her owners felt it was unfair to keep such an active dog in a home without a garden to run around in. Poppy is not like most Lurchers, she is not particularly sensitive or laid back. She is highly energetic, scatty and loving so will need owners prepared to provide enough exercise. Once Poppy has completed some basic obedience she would be ideal to take part in agility and she would love this, it would keep her stimulated and help strengthen the bond owners would of already made with her. Like most Lurchers Poppy has no idea what to do with toys but is totally obsessed by food. She will steal and scavenge whenever possible and needs to learn some control in this area before it becomes a bigger problem. Poppy is very intelligent and already knows sit and down, her owners must be happy to continue training with her especially recall as like most Lurchers or sighthounds her chase and hunt instinct can take over. Poppy will need experienced dog owners, ideally used to rescue dogs or sighthounds as she will need confident and firm handling. She is a cheeky girl and will manipulate you to get her own way if allowed, her new owners will need to be the leaders. Unfortunately due to her food obsession Poppy cannot live with children, she ideally needs an all adult household to be consistent in her training and handling. Older teenagers would be consider if they would be happy and confident to take an active role in the daily care and training. Poppy loves being around people, she can be a bit of an attention seeker if allowed so will need owners around initially to help her settle and learn to be left on her own. If handled correctly Poppy could be left for short periods but also has the potential to be anxious and should not be left for long periods in the future. Poppy is already housetrained and travels well in a car. Unknown if compatible with cats but due to her high chase levels we doubt she would be a perfect match to live with cats or other small pets. Poppy is social with other dogs but her natural chase instinct comes out in play particurlarly with smaller dogs. Owners will need to have a good recall and control off lead around other dogs as she may scare some small dogs. Poppy may also need to be muzzled off lead to protect small fluffy animals out and about in public. Poppy is such an active and affectionate girl she has so much potential and lots to offer. With owners who like to be active and enjoy training and taking part in doggy activities she will be so much fun to have in your life. If she sounds like the dog for you please contact our rehoming team at Old Windsor on 01784 494443.
