Who is Sally?
Sally is 6 to 12month old female Bull Mastiff cross. She is a dark sandy colour and has a full tail. She will be micro chipped before leaving the Home.
Why did Sally come into the Home?
Sally arrived at Battersea in December 2007 as a stray.
What is Sally like?
A wonderfully people motivated lass that does not yet fully comprehend her size and strength, Sally is a true 'gentle giant' that will require a little work in order to harness the potential within. A smart and responsive girl, she will need owners that are prepared top work her mind as well as her body and are outgoing and active.
Why has Sally been seen by the Behaviour Unit?
Sally has spent some time with one of the members of the Behaviour Unit in order for us to investigate her reactions towards other dogs whilst on lead and her general wariness of dogs when off lead around them.
Sally is reactive toward other dogs when on lead. She appears to have not had the opportunity to socialize with many dogs and is unsure of how to interact when off lead. She will need owners who are not only experienced in this type of behaviour, but confident in their abilities to socialize her with the correct types of dogs and also be able to read her body language. Sally would benefit from having a large group of social doggy friends that are fairly well mannered. This will not only help Sally learn how to be social, but will also provide new owners with plenty of opportunities to work her around dogs.
Sally has shown that when meeting new people she does occasionally submissively urinate. New owners will need to sensitive to this behaviour and be mindful of how they introduce her to friends and family.
What kind of home Sally is looking for?
Sally is not to live in an urban or city environment due to the exercise areas being too densely populated and therefore allowing her more opportunity to practice negative behaviours (e.g. lead frustration around dogs and her nervous behaviours around new people). This household should ideally have a "Sally area" where she can go if she feels overwhelmed or just as a chill-out area.
A securely enclosed private garden is essential in order to begin all training and as a place for Sally to burn off any extra energy. Ideally new owners will be able to make use of baby gates throughout the house.
What kind of owners Sally is looking for?
Owners need to have had their own dogs previously, preferably large (guarding) breeds and have a good understanding of how to maintain them within a household.
Sally will need to go into a multi-carer household (with everyone actively taking a role in her upkeep) as opposed to a single carer, as this will prevent her over bonding to one individual. Unfortunately Sally is not to live with young children due to need for consistency and other issues described earlier. Teens could potentially be considered dependant upon experience and expectations.
Lastly, Sally is a responsive girl but new owners will need to be two things:
1. Patient: her behavioural issues will most unlikely disappear overnight and will require a gradual process of socialization and training.
2. Realistic, as Sally is potentially one to be viewed as a "working project" and will need owners that are not fazed by this prospect.
What you will receive at the ends is a fantastic companion and a quirky, interactive dog.
I Think I would fit the criteria, what should I do next?
Contact a member of the Behaviour team on 0207 627 7884, or email [email protected] and quote the reference 07/06530.
Sally will need some further training in her new home. To receive advice and guidance regarding this training from the Behaviour Unit staff that have worked with her, potential owners should be prepared to come into the Dogs Home for a minimum of two visits.
