Little Mavis may be older but still has plenty of get up and go, she has all the Terrier spirit and zest. Mavis came to Battersea in April as a stray and because of her age she has not coped particularly well in the kennel environment. It is not an easy environment for most dogs but elderly dogs do find it harder than the youngsters. Mavis loves food and is willing to work for it, she already knows a few commands but hasn't had much training. Unknown if housetrained but travels well in a car.
Unlike most Terriers Mavis has no interest in toys, this may come once she is more settled in a home environment but at her age she may not want to play as much. Mavis is stubborn and a bit set in her ways, she is not comfortable at the vets and can be grumpy in this situation. Mavis does enjoy the company of other dogs and is social, although she would not be happy sharing a home with a silly juvenille but could live with an older and calm male. Needs to be tested with cats.
Ideally Mavis needs experienced dog owners who are used to older dogs and their stubborn ways. She cannot live with children, Mavis is friendly but at her time of life she needs more peace and quiet. Once settled Mavis could be left for short periods but we feel would not like to be left for long in the future. Mavis is still fairly active and enjoys her walks so will need owners who can provide the exercise she needs. This little lady will make a loving companion once settled and built a bond with her new owners, although she may not be a true lapdog as she does have her independent times.
Older dogs need a routine and plenty of understanding, if you feel you can offer this cheeky and fiesty lady a home to spend the rest of her days then please contact the rehoming team at Old Windsor on 01784 494443.
