The history bit.... Legend has it that the origin of the Dalmatian was actually Northern India but it is believed to have been brought over to Eastern Europe. Early records of the breed were discovered in Dalmatia. From here we get the name Dalmatian which has since been listed as a breed from Yugoslavia. The Dalmatian's most common use in the Regency period was as a carriage dog. Its job was to run alongside and under the horse-drawn carriages . Initially this was to provide protection for the travellers against highwaymen but in later years they became more of an ornament for the wealthy. Dalmatians were also used by fire stations, running in front of the horse-drawn wagons clearing the way.

Today the Dalmatian serves more as a companion. The breed itself is very lively, friendly and intelligent possessing a great stamina. These dogs require a great amount of exercise so prospective owners need to be fit and ready for an active life.

The Battersea bit...... Battersea does see Dalmatians coming into the Home on quite a regular basis. As the description sets out, they are strong, intelligent dogs in need of the appropriate amount of physical and mental stimulation.
