Who is Buzzer?
Buzzer is a very interactive and playful Staffordshire Bull Terrier. We believe him to be approximately 6 months old. He is medium-sized and short-haired with tan and white colouring.
Why did Buzzer come to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home?
Buzzer came into the Home as a stray in October of 2007. He is not yet neutered, but he will be neutered and micro-chipped before going to his new home.
What is Buzzer's temperament like?
This is a very happy-go-lucky lad who enjoys a general fuss and will actively seek attention. He is not the brightest pupil in the class and can become frustrated if being asked to do something he doesn't understand. Future owners should be patient with his training, working in short sessions so as not to escalate his frustration. That said, he has excellent motivations for training and he is so eager to please. Any training, though slow, will be productive. One of Buzzer's most redeemable qualities is his attitude to other dogs. He is very tolerant, loves to play but will not force interaction with another dog if they do not want to get involved.
Why was Buzzer seen by the Behaviour Unit staff in the Home?
The staff of the Behaviour Unit spent time looking at Buzzer to look more closely at his basic control and his frustration levels. An energetic and excitable youngster, he can get easily frustrated and this manifests itself in jumping up and mouthing. Toy play, food rewards and formal handling are all areas that will need to be incorporated into his training. We have found that although he can get excited or frustrated he also calms down and settles quickly afterwards. The Behaviour Unit will provide future owners with advice regarding constructive toy play, maintaining control around food and also improving formal handling through positive association. Future owners should have a knowledge of basic training and be consistent and confident when working with him.
What kind of home is Buzzer looking for?
Buzzer could live in a house or a flat but it must have a private garden that can be used for basic training and house-training. Buzzer will ideally be rehomed to a semi-rural or rural environment with as few distractions as possible so that owners can work on his control and focus without the nuisance of too much else going on.
What kind of owners is Buzzer looking for?
As mentioned before owners will need to have experience of, and have successfully worked on basic control issues. Owners must have patience and time to put into Buzzers new routine and training. This dog should not be left home alone initially, owners will have to invest time in building up his time alone gradually. Buzzer is not suitable to live with children, including visiting children, as it would be easy to overexcite him and also reinforce his behaviours when frustrated. He could potentially live with older, considerate teens depending on their experience. Ideally Buzzer would be rehomed into a single-dog environment but a mature, robust yet playful female dog would be considered.Buzzer will need some further training in his new home. To receive advice and guidance regarding this training from the Behaviour Unit staff that have worked with him, potential owners should be prepared to come into the Dogs Home for a minimum of two visits.
